Okay, here is my mood board for the catalog! I have quite a bit because I am wanting alot of reference photos for when I go out on the shoot. I have writing next to some of the pictures, you might have to click it to see it clearly. I am going to do a very clean bright catalog. This is more of my style with the negative space and pops of color. When I have the books I am going to get up really early because I want the sunrise look, I (hope..) am going to buy different flowers for the shoot and make a mini tea party, I was going to go all out, but i am learning to hone in on my ideas and i dont know if that would have been realistic. My dates are the October 31,November 1 & 2, so i will post my pictures there. I am going to go out scouting to find the perfect spot. My budget is going to be from $15.00- $20.00.

Here is my short statement about my book:

"The idea for my book was to use color and texture through watercolor, to help the reader become more imaginative with the whimsical nature of the text. I hope that when the reader is going through the imagery and text they are able to be transported to another place where their own imagination can be awakened and the story can come alive for them."

The idea for my project: I wanted to make a catalog that features not only the books but other things useful items for spending time out doors. Things to have fun, and things to help survive.

Mood Board:

One important item is the book itself because no time out in the woods is complete without some good reading material.

I then wanted to feature some simple and inexpensive items that could help you while out in the woods. I included things like an axe, sunblock, bug spray, rain poncho, map, wet wipes, playing cards (in case you have down time etc.), water bottles, fire starter, rope etc.

All of the items are in-expensive, super easy to use and very valuable for in the field. Oh and I tried to match them up my color...or by general feel to the book itself.

Anyways here is a photo or two just so you know kind of what the imagery will look like.
I am working through all of my photos editing..and will also finish up shooting today. All shooting should be done by the end of the day. Yay!

Budget: As far as this goes I am not to hung up on a budget. The gas was cheap...it was just me going so there was no issue with having to pay some one for photos or anything. I am guessing it might be like $20-30 dollars. I spent $60 on the tools (but this is a wash really because it was all stuff I needed and will be using all winter and summer).

Book Statement

When I was creating this book, I wanted to create something that feels like home when you pick it up. Using colors and textures to create certain emotions that go with each chapter of the book. I liked using my hands for this project and creating illustrations out of scrapbook paper.

So for this project I know what I want to do, and a lot of inspiration comes from my experiences in national parks, and traveling around with my family. I got a box of of stuff from my Mom which had older pictures, mementos, and a whole lot national park stamps.








Mood board, followed by concept sketches, different views, and then refined sketches. My refined sketches don't have color on them, but I have the color palate on my mood board. I'm not going to finalize the colors until I have the photos, so I can coordinate my colors with the colors in the photos.

Kim's Catalog

I really want to follow the outline of my book to match the catalog. So using the line with text inside will be used on top the photos but the treatment really can't be decided until I have my photos. The info will be limited to a short blurb or even just the authors name. The size of the book will be small, page size 5x8 but will be printed 5x16 so the booklet folds in half. I want this to be a easily accessible catalog, like one you'd grab by a register or out the door of a store. Because the bulk of the look will come from the photography it's hard to say what sort of look the text will be like but it will a sans serif, modern magazine type.

Budget: Between 10 and 20 dollars.

For my concept I want to have 2 picture taken in the same spot, 1 picture of the ground (where the book will be laying) and have the other be of the scenery directly up from that ground shot.

I will have the spread be presented in a vertical format with the scenery shot on top and the ground shot on the bottom. The places where I take these photos will be themed around the designs of the books.

BOOK CONCEPT:

The concept for this book is based on the relationship between the two worlds and how they exist together. The beginning starts in a realistic environment and ventures its way to an abstract, bizarre reality. The book ends with Alice coming back to her sensible world and realizing that she has matured through the experience. The book is illustrated with black, two dimensional objects to portray a visual relationship between the two worlds.

Book Overview:
In this version of Alice in Wonderland I had fun making it is entertaining and exciting for kids, and for adults both. Overlayed on top of each image are multiple illustrations from the original book. Each image focuses on contrasting colors and making you feel slightly peculiar yet intriguing just like the content of the book does.


Ok here are my latest ideas. The chapter title and first couple of paragraphs will go on the right side of these spreads.

Cover & Illustrations
This is a rough version of the cover page. I am still going to be working with the text roughing it up and making it conform to the mushroom. As well as making the circle at the bottom look better. The text is very blocky but I will be working with it. I want it to look like the text on the hat in my mood board. I guess we'll see if it works.



Here is what I am doing with my chapter titles. I am going to have the text more odd and each letter will be tilted different directions.




Mood Board


I want to keep the odd feeling throughout the book and make it seem as if you are peering into this peculiar slightly dark situation. Ill be using bright blue and orange colors primarily and all other colors are dark and muted. Title text will be odd and letters are extending into each other like shown. I will be using pastels for my illustrations.
Book Layout: I want to stay with simple one column pages. Nothing too fancy because the illustrations will hopefully be cool enough to compensate.

Cost Estimate

I am wanting to do a 8x10 hardcover with a dust jacket and the amount of pages will be anywhere from 81-120. In order to do that it would cost $41.95 and I would need to purchase two so that plus shipping should be somewhere around $90 in the long run.

So here is a few sketches and pictures of ideas of what I have so far. I'm going to try and go for the dark and gloomy effect. For the cover I want to have Alice venturing into the dark woods. For the Chapters I'm going to pick an event and focus on that for the illustrations, I'm going to use a very limited color scheme of black and white and a few other muted colors with an occasional bright color to bring out the items importance.
