J.J. Embleton-Project1 "A Deeper Darker Alice!"

So I don't know if we were suppose to post our newer stuff on the same posts as before but I did it anyway. Here below are first the cover and chapter title designs and the rest are most of my illustrations for my book. I have several more to go but let me know what you think of these so I can get an idea of how I'm doing.

........................................................................................

OK yeah i know... sorry, the title is cheesy! But I have been really into the late 1940s early 1950s Film Noir genre for a while, and decided that it would be pretty interesting to do all the illustration and design for Alice in that style. Anyway when i was looking up stuff for ideas i came across a ton of work that is more modern like comic book art and other art in this really edgy dark style. So that is what i am going to base my book on.

Here is my Mood Board with base style reference ideas, color schemes, and possible fonts.

Sorry, the thumbnail sketches are a little hard to see. In the 1st page there are my illustration thumbnails and basically i just want them to be really dark with hard shadows and strong silhouettes. The 2nd page are mostly my chapter title headings and same as the illustrations i want dark and contrasting but probably just with the typography. The 3rd page has a mix of ideas for the cover of the book but the bottoms ones are the Noir ones that i will be using mostly.

Hope you all like the ideas, comments appreciated!

  1. I really like this. I too was thinking about doing a darker version of Alice, but I like your take on this. Intense, edgy, dark, but not the same kind of intense edgy dark that the video game "Alice" or Tim Burtons movie portrays. It will definitely give Alice a new look that hasn't been done before.

  2. I think your illustrations are fabulous. The only thing I noticed was Alices hands. While I like the sketchy feel of her. I think her hands are a little clunky compared to many of the other characters. This was a bit of a distraction when viewing your images.

The colors are great as well. Super shadowy and very much along the lines of your concept.

Have you thought of body text? What typeface will you use to still fit in with your other text but be readable as body text.

  4. You have got a great graphic look going on and it really fits your concept well.

I am also curious as to how you are going to layout the body text.

  5. So this fabulous, I really like this direction. It takes me back to a different time and place. I think it will be interesting how text goes in as well.

  6. Oh my AWesome!! Your illustrations are sweet and I like the dark bands of color that background the pages! Some of your illustrations have dramatic shadowing which I really like and some seam like they should have shadowing they just don't...maybe even those shadows out from page to page!

  7. This is awesome. I think this is also the most original of the class. My one concern is that this screams graphic novel and I would expect it to be heavy with illustrations. Im not sure how many your doing but if there are too few pics it might leave the reader disappointed. Other than that this is incredible.

  8. Wow. You amaze me. Are you doing an illustration for the chapter titles or here and there. If you are using the images for the chapter title pages, if so, where is it going?

  10. These look great. I like how some of the illustrations have more line qualities to them, but that's just it, only some have it & some are strictly solid shapes. Maybe go one way or the other. I think by using yellow strictly for Alice is strong since it is such a bright yellow.

I too am interested how this will be incorporated with text on the spreads.

  11. I'm sorry I made you think they all had to be done today. haha don't hate me. They look great though, very cohesive together. i really like the gestural lines you've added in some of the illustrations, maybe more of those here and there? Can't wait to see the spreads, keep it up!
