Kim Shelby - Project 1 - Alice Get's A New Pair of Shoes

Ok so obviously I don't having any illustrations or chapter headings but here is the direction I'm going with the type. I want it to feel very high fashion. The photos will be done this week and next week which will allow me to figure out how I want to manipulate the type, page layout, etc. Also because I am not doing the entire original text, I have changed the title to Alice on the Inside: a photographic interpretation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

ok so here are some unedited shots of where there will be some possible shoots, and my progress on the Alice fashion, a dress made out of napkins. Yes, napkins. I'm still working on the type and selections so i can manipulate them.

Budget: I'd really like to do a larger book (the portrait size book). It's $20 to $30 dollars depending on the size and due to the intensity of the artwork there would only be a maximum of 25 pages.

  1. Kim if you could do some awesome Alice-Fashion-Show-Type-Photography for the "illustrations" I think that would be way awesome! And it is a feel that fits you and your style, which is a benefit too!

  3. I like where you are headed with the project and think that it is smart to edit the book down. Is the book still going to be readable and make sense though?

Also I would just try to make each of the photos that you take your own, because it seems like this has been done many times before.

I am excited to see what you come up with.

  4. I cant wait to see the photos! I told my mom what you are doing (hahahaha...) and we were talking about how much fun it would be. so we both have been looking at your posts to see if you have added anything new. The photography will be a blast, i cant believe you are making your own outfits for it.. what kind of lens are you going to use for it? (im just curious on the look of the photo) i think its very creative.

  5. I can not wait to see the clothing! Looks like you are doing a great job. I would like to see some of the story that you have for this, is the story re-written? I remember you talking about that.

I think the the best thing you can do is really try and fight against the editorial that was already done. If you can make it different enough where we dont even think about that editorial your project will be a huge success.

  6. So...I like the type choices. I think the bottom one could be great for a cleaner typographical feel. However the other two look like they would work for fashion magazine titles. My concern would be the second typeface you use, because these combinations could work, but i really only like the bottom one for the combo.
Anyway, good luck with the shoots. I know they will be great...just want to see how you treat them with text...as a spread, & what content from the book you use.

  8. I want to see more! i can't wait to see the clothing you make. and how are you re-writing the story? I think you will have fun with that. As everyone has said, make sure you give it your personal kim treatment. Do what no one has done yet, you can do it :)

  9. Love the idea. Its a good way to gear the story to older audiences.

  10. I am so excited to see your pics. Judging by your "unedited shots" I think that the pictures will have a nice flow altogether. For the typefaces I would choose the bottom one. The placement of the letterforms seems to compliment each other better than the other 2 choices.
